„In hoc signo“: Zwar weiss niemand so richtig, wie das Zeichen ausgesehen hat, das Kaiser Konstantin erschienen ist und ihm 312 den Sieg in der Schlacht an der Milvischen Brücke vorausgesagt hat, doch mit einem Kreuz wird es schon etwas zu tun gehabt haben.

Auf jeden Fall wird „Crux“ – eigentlich Marterholz, an dem man sich vor Schmerzen krümmt bis zum Tod (†) – seither als mächtiges christliches Symbol verstanden. Und als solches ist es dann „siegreich“ getragen worden an alle vier Enden der Welt: wieder so eine Kreuzfigur.

Neben den vier Himmelsrichtungen auch geometrische Form, unauffälliges
Erkennungszeichen. In der orientalischen Erzählung von Ali Baba durchschaut es die kluge Sklavin Mardschana allerdings trotzdem, rotwelscher „Zinken“, die vier „Säulen der Erde“ usw. – Und hat nicht auch die Flagge der NATO etwas von einem kompass- bzw. windrosenartigen Kreuz?

Es gehört zum Wesen jedes Symbols, dass es interpretiert werden kann, wenn nicht sogar muss. Klar, eine Rose ist eine Rose ist eine Rose, wie Gertrud Stein meint, doch fallweise aber halt auch noch… Mit dem Kreuz ergeht es einem ähnlich, auch mit den von Thomas Thüring erschaffenen.

Thomas Thüring nennt die Bilder-Installation nach seiner Lieblingskirche „Antonius“. Vor rund 90 Jahren ist dieses Gotteshaus von Karl Moser in Basel erbaut worden. Der erste Sakralbau der Schweiz in reinem Sichtbeton („Brutalismus“) ist inzwischen, es dauert halt, mehrheitlich von der Bevölkerung akzeptiert worden. Nur noch selten hört man, dass die im Vergleich zum Traditionellen abstrakte Kirche „Seelensilo“ genannt wird. Und an den Glasfenstern von Otto Staiger und Ernst Stocker hat es von Anfang nur wenig auszusetzen gegeben.
